The eTextbooks created by this program are provided in two formats: ePub and PDF. More information about the differences between these two files is available in Reader Support. Please reference the resources below for further directions and guidance.

Mac

Download and Read an ePub File

To download one of our ePub files on a Mac, we recommend the following process or you can watch the video below:

  1. Navigate to the PA-ADOPT Bookshelf using your web browser (such as Safari, Chrome, or Firefox).
  2. Select the desired eTextbook cover image or title to open the book’s page.
  3. Below the cover image, book title, and author name, select the ePub button. The ePub file should automatically download to your Mac – typically into the Downloads folder or onto the Desktop (depending on your browser settings).

We recommend viewing our ePub files in the Books app, which comes preinstalled on all Macs. To import the ePub file into the Books app:

  1. Open the Books app. The app can be located a couple of different ways:
    • In the Finder, select Go > Applications from the menubar at the top of the screen. Scroll through the list of apps until you find the Books app, then double-click it to open the app. OR
    • Open the Launchpad app in the dock at the bottom of your screen. Scroll through the list of apps until you find the Books app, then click its icon to open the app.
  2. In the Books app, select File > Import…
  3. Navigate to where you downloaded the ePub file, which was most likely either the Downloads folder or the Desktop, select the file, then click the Import button.

The ePub file will appear in the Library section of the Books app. From this point forward, you should be able to access the book from the Books app on your Mac.

For additional information about using Books for Mac, see Read books in Books on Mac.

Download and Read a PDF File

To download one of our PDF files on a Mac, we recommend the following process:

  1. Navigate to the PA-ADOPT Bookshelf using your web browser (such as Safari, Chrome, or Firefox).
  2. Select the desired eTextbook cover image or title to open the book’s page.
  3. Below the cover image, book title, and author name, select the PDF button.
  4. The PDF file will appear in a new browser tab. We recommend downloading the PDF to your Mac to make it easier to access in the future. In Chrome and Firefox, the download button is typically found toward the upper-right corner of the browser window, and in Safari, it’s typically found towards the bottom of the browser window in the center.

To use the PDF version of the eTextbook on a Mac we recommend using Adobe’s free PDF reader: Adobe Acrobat Reader. Our books will also display properly in the Preview app, which comes preinstalled on all Macs.
